KUALA LUMPUR: The Prisons Department is mulling a boost to its arsenal of non-lethal weapons, says Datuk Seri Zulkifli Omar.
Its director-general said this after witnessing a demonstration by distributor Fortress Defence Sdn Bhd for such equipment during the Defence Services Asia and National Security Asia 2018 exhibition yesterday.
Later, the company presented Zulkifli with five JPX 4 Jet Protector “pepper guns”, capable of firing an incapacitating irritant up to 7m.
The device holds up to four rounds and does not need to fire a projectile at a target.
Zulkifli thanked the company for sponsoring the devices, complete with accessories and ammunition, saying that they could help bolster preventive actions in prisons.
When asked if the department would consider purchasing them in the near future, Zulkifli said they would be considered based on the allocation they are given.
